Boolean search cheat sheet for Naukri and LinkedIn
The operators that work on Naukri Resdex, LinkedIn and Google X-ray, with copy-ready examples for Indian roles.
Boolean search is the fastest way to turn a job description into a short list. The operators are the same everywhere; the quirks differ by platform.
The operators
- AND: both terms must appear. Java AND Kafka
- OR: either term. ("Backend Engineer" OR "Backend Developer")
- NOT: exclude. NOT intern
- Quotes: exact phrase. "Spring Boot"
- Brackets: group OR terms. (Bengaluru OR Bangalore)
Write titles as a group of variants, must-have skills joined by AND, nice-to-haves as a group, and exclusions at the end.
A complete example
("Backend Engineer" OR "Backend Developer" OR "Software Engineer") AND Java AND "Spring Boot" AND (Kafka OR AWS OR Microservices) AND (Bengaluru OR Bangalore) NOT (intern OR fresher)
Naukri Resdex
Resdex supports the full set with the Boolean toggle on. Keep locations in the query as well as in the filter: many profiles list the city only in free text. Use both spellings for cities (Bengaluru and Bangalore, Gurugram and Gurgaon).
LinkedIn's keyword box supports AND, OR, NOT, quotes and brackets, but ignores location in keywords; use the location filter. Recruiter seats add title and company fields; the free search does not. Keep queries under about 200 characters.
Google X-ray
To find public LinkedIn profiles without a paid seat: site:linkedin.com/in "Product Manager" (Bengaluru OR Bangalore) -intern. Google uses a minus sign for NOT and treats spaces as AND.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting spelling variants: "Sr." vs "Senior", "SDE" vs "Software Engineer"
- Too many AND terms: each one halves the results; start broad and add
- Location only in the filter on Naukri: you miss profiles that mention it in text
- Not excluding freshers and interns for senior roles
Our free boolean builder writes all three strings from one form. Inside HireZeta, the same query runs against your own database and ranks results against the role.
